Soon Septicflesh will hit Russia with long awaited tour. On this occasion we interviewed Seth Siro Anton - frontman of the band. Fascinating talk about latest album'Titan', religion and bogatyrs is here. Enjoy!

Your latest album - ‘Titan’ - is outstanding piece of music. Where do you search inspiration for the music and lyrics on this album?

                    - There is a variety of conceptual gates opened in the album Titan. There are songs inspired from facts, historical, scientific etc and songs revolving around fiction, myth, mind-games. In any case we like to use strong symbolism and especially when it is deriving from the ancient past, as it is deeply rooted to the collective dna of mankind. There is an obvious connection of our latest album to Greek mythological elements, that link in strange deeper ways the songs.

Reading the texts of your actual studio work, I ve got such an impression, that they describe some kind of evolution – the way from the obedience of some kind to the point, where those one who obeyed became immortal \ rose over the World \ others in this or other way. Why did you choose title Titan as the album’s name? Why from all stages of transformation you are singing of, this one was chosen as the main one?

                    - First of all, Titan is a word with a strong vibe around it and besides caring the godly element in its more primal form in its meaning, there is the notion of something gigantic and chaotic. On top of that, we wanted to make a direct reference to the moon Titan. We were thrilled from the fact that besides having the specific mythological name, it has the potential to be terraformed in the future, as it has a nitrogen atmosphere at reasonable pressure, global circulation of nutrients and plenty of wat

er in the form of ice. So, indeed evolution is an essential building block for the concept of our album Titan.

The question, inspired by the 2nd song from Titan - Burn. How do you think... Knowledge - is it damnation or the privilegde?

                    - It is like a knife that you can use as a tool, or as a weapon. Surely you can also cut yourself trying to master it. But the problem is not knowledge, but factors as ill will, wicked intention, pour decision making, lack of skill.

Your music summons strong impressions and creates strong visual connections. Speaking about the latest work, I can confirm, that whenever I was listening to any of the songs, I have been always seeing their heroes, and also surrounding landscapes of the stories, unrolling in those opuses. You would be a perfect group to create soundtrack to some movie, which is not less than for example Bram Stocker's Dracula! Now comes a question: would you like to make something like that? And if yes, what will be your movie about?

                    - Yes, we would be thrilled to work on the soundtrack, of a decent movie of course. Our music could dress appropriately films with dark twists in the script, especial films revolving around strong psychological stories, wicked historical events, or interesting science fiction and horror stories.

Speaking about mythology: in school my favourite lesson was history and I was never stopping loving Egyptian and Greek mythology (as well as ancient World's myths in general). What about you? Do you also find inspiration in those legends, and if so, what are your favourite mythological figures and why

                    - There are so many great mythological stories with interesting protagonists as Prometheus, Osiris, Gilgamesh etc. Mythology is very close to our heart and mind in Septicflesh and many of our songs throughout our discography suggest that. We acknowledge the great power of metaphor that lurks behind the symbolism and we try to use it appropriately, in order to open the mind to darker aspects of cosmos.

Russian mythology there is some sort of analogue to Titans called ‘Bogatyr’. Have you heard something about them or about ancient Russian mythology and culture?

                    - I am aware about mythological creatures as the Alkonost and Bereginy, but I would certainly like to learn more about your myths and general folklore.

Last time you were in Russia in 2009. Do you have some special memories about those days in the past? Do you want to repeat something from that time in the upcoming tour?

-I remember that we had 2 amazing shows in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Especially in Moscow even for Monday show it was so powerful and dynamic…I am 100% sure that we are going to repeat that as its always a great pleasure to play in Russia!

Your new drummer is YouTube star, ex-Decapitated, ex-Behemoth and ex-Vesania member Kerim Lechner. How is it to work with this guy? How does he influenced the sound of your band?

                    - He is a monstrous drummer and a speed demon with a great technique. Also he is a great, down to earth guy. We can’t wait to work together for the creation of the next album. Surely, he will bring a fresh perspective to the songs, opening new rhythmical paths for experimentation.

September Septicflesh will hit Russia with long-awaited tour. We are so excited about upcoming shows. What do you expect from your Russian fans?

                    - We are also excited to come again to Russia. There are many loyal fans there that are supporting our music for many years. We are sure that our shows there, will be like hell on earth.

In the end of 2014/beginning of 2015 your band parted ways with drummer Fotis Benardo. Can you tell us something about that?

                    - It was something sad, but we felt it was the right thing to do. There were many little things, during a long period of time that were indicating that Septicflesh gradually were becoming to him more of a secondary obligation, than a priority. In any case, his contribution to Septicflesh will be always appreciated. We really wish that his future will be bright and very successful.

Here, in Russia, we have people from almost all confessions, but ‘official’ Russian religion is orthodoxy. As you may know, some orthodox fanatics cancelled the shows of many famous heavy metal bands because, as they think, bands are promoting death, violence and sodomy. What is your opinion about religion, and are you ready to face the obstacles of Russian Orthodoxy during the tour? How do you think, how metal community can resist those fanatics? Also, do you think, that music has to be censored as try to censor music these religious fanatics here in Russia.

                    - The word fanatic is so very close to the word fool. Yet, the fanatic is a dangerous fool, that can perform extreme and most times even contradictory acts, judging to the belief system that he-she is supposedly following. We defend the concept of choice, instead of the blind comfort of the herd mentality. Censorship on Art, is like trying to put obstacles on the mind and soul. We are aware that due to fanatics there are problems sometimes on metal shows in your country, but we will come anyway, because else is letting the dogmatic fools win in their game. Sound beats silence. We will come, to give the opportunity to our fans to join us in a metal communion.

Besides the fact that you’re a musician, you’re also photographer. What do you shoot in your spare time? H do you think, were you not a musician, would you be able to be a full-time devoted photographer? Can you give us an example of the most impressive and inspired photoshoot you made until now?

-Actually I studied in the University of Fine Arts in Athens painting, scenography and Photography. Mostly i am working with artworks and if sometimes if I have free time I make photo sessions and some paintings for my stock.

I use Mixed technique which I am trying to combine Fine art painting with Photography, collage of different elements and textures. Then the final process is always with digital design software like Adobe Photoshop or Painter X.

What can you say for the Russian fans?

-As I mentioned above for Septicflesh always its something really special and a great pleasure to play in Russia.

Possibly because Greece and Russia have many commons and generally both countries have a great and unique culture. From our previous gigs in Russia I remember that we had an amazing feedback from Russian crowd and I have to say a big thank you for this great support !
